Ping (latency) is the time it takes for a data packet to travel from your device to a server and back, measured in milliseconds (ms). Low ping is critical for online gaming, video calls, and real-time applications. This test measures your round-trip latency to the nearest M-Lab NDT7 server — giving you a precise, kernel-level picture of your connection's responsiveness.
Common questions about ping & latency test
For competitive online gaming (FPS, battle royale), a ping under 30 ms is excellent and under 60 ms is acceptable. Ping above 100 ms causes noticeable lag. For casual gaming, under 100 ms is fine. Console games are generally more tolerant of higher ping than PC first-person shooters.
Jitter is the variation in your ping over time. A ping that consistently stays at 25 ms is far better than one that swings between 5 ms and 100 ms — even if the average is similar. High jitter causes choppy audio on video calls, lag spikes in gaming, and buffering in live streams. It's typically caused by WiFi interference or ISP network congestion.
The most effective fixes are: (1) use a wired ethernet cable instead of WiFi, (2) restart your router and modem, (3) close background applications that use bandwidth, (4) switch to a 5 GHz WiFi band, (5) check for ISP outages in your area, and (6) if the issue persists, contact your ISP — consistently high ping can indicate a line fault.
"Ping" and "latency" are used interchangeably and both measure round-trip time in milliseconds. "Lag" is a subjective term for the noticeable delay caused by high latency or jitter in games and applications. Lag has no defined threshold — some players feel it above 60 ms, others only notice it above 150 ms.
